Residential Accommodation Deposit (RAD)

RAD represents the total lump sum cost of care for the lifetime a resident is in care. It is also referred to as a bond and is paid upfront.

The balance of the RAD or bond will be refunded (minus any agreed deductions) to the resident (or their estate) when the resident leaves or terminates their agreement for residential services.

Example using Standard Room RAD = $400,000

Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP)

DAP is an alternative way to pay for accommodation. It is like a monthly rental style payment. The payment is calculated using the price of the room (the RAD) and an interest rate set by Government called the Maximium Permissable Interest Rate (MPIR). This rate is reviewed quarterly.

As this is a daily amount payable for residential care, there is no refund to the resident (or their estate) when the resident leaves or terminates their agreement for residential services.

Example using Standard Room RAD = $400,000 or daily payment (DAP) = $83.83/ day. DAP = (RAD x $7.65%*)/ 365

*7.65% is a fictional MPIR used for this example. To view the current MPIR click here

Combination of RAD & DAP

You can choose to pay for accommodation using a combination of RAD and DAP, where you pay a partial RAD amount and the remaining balance as a DAP.

Example using the Standard Room RAD - 50% RAD is $200,000 paid up front and the balance paid as a daily payment of $41.91/ day

In addition to the Accommodation fee there are some additional fees covering basic living costs and other services:

Basic Daily Care Fee
$65.55 (as at 01 December 2025)

This fee covers the basic living costs such as meals, cleaning, laundry, heating and cooling. The basic daily care fee is determined by the Department of Health at roughly 85% of the full aged pension. This fee is the same in every aged care home in Australia, and is paid by everyone who resides either in respite or permanent care. Residents are required to pay this a month in advance, and the Government increases this fee twice a year in line with the age pension.

Contributions based on your Means Assessment

These are additional fees that some people pay toward the cost of their day-to-day care. Not everyone will have to pay a means-tested care fee. The exact amount you will pay is determined through a means assessment and is subject to annual and lifetime caps.

Hotelling Contributions: Effective as at 1 November 2025. This is an additional fee contribution towards daily living services such as meals, cleaning and laundry.

Non Clinical Care Contribution: Effective as at 1 November 2025. This is an additional fee contribution towards personal care services such as bathing, mobility assistance and lifestyle activities.

Means tested fee: Effective as at 1 July 2014. This is an additional fee contribution towards the cost of their care.

Higher Everyday Living Fee

This fee is charged for higher quality services for an additional fee (e.g Hair dressing services, Pay TV subscriptions and Wifi). NB. PM Aged Care include some of these services already in it’s standard fees.)
